If you’re looking at buying a used car or truck, gather all the facts available about the vehicle before making an offer.

Certified pre-owned vehicles come with detailed vehicle history reports like those from CarProof. Ask if the vehicle comes with a limited warranty, a multi-point inspection, a roadside assistance package and if there is an exchange policy.

If a vehicle is being sold privately, you can purchase a vehicle claims history report either through ICBC or CarProof. An ICBC report provides claims information from BC while a CarProof report provides claims information from across North America.

In addition to ordering a history report, there are a few more steps you may want to do when buying a used vehicle, such as:

  1. Do your own inspection.
  2. Do a lien search.
  3. Search the Canadian Police Information Centre to see if the vehicle has been reported as stolen.
  4. Have the vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic.
